AA survey reveals tailgating is the biggest annoyance on UK roads

tailgatingA survey conducted by the UK’s Automobile Association has found the thing that most annoys the country’s motorists is somebody driving too close behind them. The AA noted that the practice known as tailgating has constantly topped the table of polls as the most irritating thing that can happen to motorists on Britain’s roads.

The AA has been carrying out the survey on pet peeves for drivers over the past nine years and has quizzed 140,000 members in that time. More than a quarter of the respondents (26 per cent) have labelled tailgating as the most annoying.

Tailgating was followed by drivers using mobile phones at the wheel with exactly a quarter of the votes. Drivers sitting in middle lanes was not too far behind and netted 23 per cent of the votes to take third place.

Veering across lanes was fourth with 10 per cent and, with 7 per cent of the votes, overtaking on the inside propped up the top five of the worst driving actions. Year-on-year, the AA notes that tailgating has taken the dubious honour of topping the most annoying habits table every year bar one in the last seven.

The polls found that a full three quarters of AA members would like to see more police officers on the nation’s roads. The respondents noted that more officers would be more effective in dealing with inconsiderate and law-breaking drivers.

Commenting on the findings of the marathon survey, AA public affairs guru Jack Cousens said bad driving habits such as tailgating were infuriating and dangerous to boot. He carried on by claiming the only effective deterrent against rude and dangerous driving was better policing.
