AA tells UK motorists to ensure cars are scraped free of snow

snow ukThe Automobile Association has issued a warning reminding drivers to ensure they scrape all snow off their vehicles. The alert explained that just scraping snow off the windows was not enough and drivers faced a possible £100 fine and up to nine penalty points on their licences for the offence.

The AA’s statement detailed the different penalties applicable to snow and moving vehicles. The first applicable regulation is Highway Code Rule 229. This states that all lights and number plates have got to be clearly visible and not obscured by snow. Breaking the rule carries a fine of £60 and three points.

The second part of the regulation in the Highway Code says all snow which might fall off or blow away needs to be removed. Any snow which does fall off and is even partly responsible for causing an accident will cost the offender £100 and nine points.

The advisory was actually released earlier this week and while many parts of the UK were blanketed in heavy snow. With the meteorologists saying more sleet and slow is on its way, the advice is as relevant now as it was a few days ago.

The AA’s Luke Bosdet said if there was a foot of snow on a car roof it was more likely than not to blow off once the vehicle was in motion. The spokesperson carried on by saying the snow could land on the windscreens of cars following and blind their drivers. He finished off with the footnote that most people had scrapers and they should used to remove excess snow.
