Air Berlin, Germany’s second largest carrier, is one of the oldest discount airlines in Europe. Yet despite its reputation as a budget airline, Air Berlin cannot be more different in its model and practices than most major no-frills carriers in Europe, including easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, SkyEurope, bmi and even Aer Lingus. Unlike these airlines, Air Berlin tickets may be offered at discounted prices, but in-flight service is hardly “no-frills.” In fact, Air Berlin seems to have more in common with full service flag carriers in this regard.
One of the key differences between Air Berlin and its discount rivals is that the former offers passengers complimentary light meals and beverages on all flights. All other budget carriers charge for these in-flight services, but with Air Berlin, they are included in the ticket price. Similarly to legacy carriers like British Airways, Air Berlin offers passengers complimentary sandwiches on all European routes, as well as free non-alcoholic beverages. Full, hot meals and spirits are also available, but for an additional fee.
Additionally, unlike other budget carriers, Air Berlin offers passengers the opportunity to collect frequent flyer points. In fact, those who join in the next few weeks can receive a bonus gift amounting to 500 points, without making a single air ticket purchase. Air Berlin’s frequent flyer program is called “TopBonus,” and passengers who enroll in this are offered free seat reservations, a discount of €10 on medium and long-haul flights, increased luggage allowance, and an additional checked item of sports baggage. All bookings can be arranged on Air Berlin’s recently redesigned, multi-lingual website (www.airberlin.com ).
