Air France jumbo jet narrowly escapes disaster in Montreal
Posted on: August 27th, 2008 by Doug SmithAn Air France Boeing 747 jumbo jet slid off the runway at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport earlier today. The plane was carrying approximately 500 passengers and crew members. After a deadly crash in Spain just last week, Air France was fortunate this did not turn into an accident of anywhere similar proportions. A Trudeau Airport spokesperson confirmed that the Boeing 747 did, in fact, slide off the runway this afternoon, but there have been no reported injuries among the passengers and crew members on board.
Stephanie Lepage, representing Montreal-Trudeau, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) that the Air France aircraft slid off the runway and ended up in the grass nearby just after landing at the airport. All passengers onboard the plane have since been brought to the terminal building and it has been officially confirmed that no one suffered injuries as a result of the incident. The Boeing 747 aircraft also appears to be largely undamaged, indicating that it may be ready to fly again once it undergoes safety inspections. Air France, however, was quick to add that it would launch a formal inquiry into what transpired and will also offer its complete cooperation with airport authorities in Montreal as they too look into the matter.
Thank you to CBC News for the initial report.
