Air New Zealand targeting US customers shows results

The campaign by Air New Zealand to help revive international visitor numbers to New Zealand is beginning to show signs of success.

Ed Sims, the group general manager of the international airline, credits an innovative marketing programme in the US, combined with aggressive pricing, for the improvement in bookings in recent weeks.

Sims said: “At this stage, with bookings up week-on-week, indications are we’ve stemmed the short-term demand fall which is good news for tourism operators. Cumulatively we remain a long way below last year’s bookings. Nonetheless we are now more confident that we will not have to reduce capacity further than the nine percent already in place for the next four months.”

He added: “It certainly is encouraging to see that in the face of an economic crisis in the world’s largest economy, US consumers are still prepared to spend when they spot a great product at bargain prices. New Zealand’s appeal as a clean, green and safe destination has never been more valued.”

According to Sims, the challenge facing New Zealand tourism is to improve the nation’s presence in important world markets, and for players in the industry to work jointly, particularly in current economic conditions, to recover from the decline of the past year.
