Air rage incident on Irish flight
Posted on: August 15th, 2008 by Jean AdamsAccording to a report in the Irish Times, several passengers on a flight from Dublin to Crete were detained by authorities in Italy following an air rage incident onboard the plane. Local authorities indicated that five British and Irish men-all of whom were in their twenties-were arrested for a brawl that occurred on the plane. Eyewitnesses reported that the men appeared to have been drinking at the Dublin Airport prior to the Futura Gael flight to Crete and began threatening each other on the plane. An 18 year old passenger told journalists that others on the flight felt that their safety was at risk and this convinced the pilot to divert the plane and land in Venice, in order to remove the unruly travelers.
According to another eyewitness testimony, one of the men proceeded to “smash” the overhead compartments on the plane with his hands. This level of aggression frightened passengers on the flight, many of whom were schoolchildren. Airline staff at Futura Gael later issued passengers an apology, noting that there was no way to avoid the disruption to their summer holiday, as the unruly men had to be removed from the flight, in order to guarantee everyone’s security. Italian police immediately took the men into custody upon landing in Venice, but foreign affairs officials in Dublin did not reveal whether they had been contacted by any Irish nationals detained in Italy. A spokesperson for Futura Gael told journalists that the carrier would proceed with an investigation into what transpired on the plane.
Thank you to the Irish Times for the initial report.
