Air rage incidents on the increase

According to the BBC, the number of “air rage” incidents occurring at Gatwick airport, which are reported to police, is on the rise.

Last year, 58 such incidents were reported, involving passengers on board planes that either took off  from or landed at the Sussex airport. The number was an increase on the 50 that were reported during the previous year.

When problems occurring on the ground are added to the number, nearly 10 incidents per week were reported to the police during the first three months of this year. Included in the incidents were assaults and abusive and threatening behaviour, some of which were related to alcohol consumption.

Overall, there were 52 arrests made and 63 passengers were prohibited from travelling on their flights.

Given the increasing frequency of reported incidents, Sussex Police are actively trying to curb the problem of “disruptive passengers” at the airport, asking for the help of business operators at the airport to help stamp out the troublesome behaviour.

Inspector Mark Callaghan commented: “What we’re doing is just trying to get people at the airport to have a look at their area of the business and to think what they do [and] how does that affect a passenger’s behaviour on an aircraft. That includes the licensed premises and they’ve been very supportive.”
