On Dec. 28, 2014, an AirAsia flight crashed into the Java Sea while it was en route from Surabaya to Singapore. This crash resulted in the deaths of all 162 people on board. Until now, experts had no idea what caused the crash. After an investigation, authorities found that the plane climbed into the air too fast, causing it stalled out. The transport minister of Indonesia, Ignasius Jonan, said during a parliamentary hearing that the flight ascended at a speed of 6,000 feet per minute.
According to Jonan, there is no passenger jet in the world that can climb that fast. It’s unknown why the pilot tried to make the plane do that, but it’s believed that the plane encountered problems as it approached a storm. The last contact that the plane had with the air traffic control tower was to say that he was taking the plane up to a higher altitude to avoid the storm. Despite a number of search parties looking for bodies, only around one-third have been recovered from the crash area.
When talking about the crash, Jonan said that the plane climbed faster than normal during its last minutes and stalled out. It’s rare for any kind of jet to climb 6,000 feet per minute. In fact, he told the Indonesian House of Representatives that it’s rare to even hear of a fighter jet climbing that fast, let alone a passenger plane. To put it into perspective, commercial planes are only able to climb 1,000 to 2,000 feet per minute depending on the model. They are not made to soar into the air fast. The pilot simply pushed the plane beyond its limits. Despite this, it’s unlikely that the crash had anything to do with terrorism.
While search teams are still looking for bodies, they have found the fuselage of the plane. It is believed that the remaining bodies might be in the fuselage, and they are working on a plan to retrieve it. Due to the location and size of the fuselage, it will be difficult to recover.
Airline experts are not sure if there is much that could have been done to prevent this crash. Despite this, Jonan says that he proposes changes to all aviation safety standards. He wants something done to prevent such problems in the future. He believes that the best way to prevent this problem in the future is to conduct health checks on all flight crew members and air traffic control workers.
