Wednesday was a devastating day for the people of Pakistan when an Airblue flight crashed in foggy and rainy weather. The company is a private airline in Pakistan that offers domestic and international flights. The service that crashed was traveling from Karachi to Islamabad, the capital, with 152 crew and passengers on board, but all of them were killed, making this the worst air accident in Pakistan ever.
The aircraft crashed into Margalla Hills, which is a heavily-forested area north of the capital. It was shrouded in fog at the time of the crash. Photos of the wreckage showed fire and smoke rising from the site. Due to weather conditions and the location of the scene, it took rescue workers several hours to get there, but by the end of the night they said that they had accounted for everyone, though there were no survivors.
Officials say that the pilot was told on his final approach by air traffic controllers at Benazir Bhutto International Airport that he needed to divert the plane due to rain and thick clouds. Interior Minister Rehman Malik has suggested that there was some confusion. This is a tragic accident, he continued, but they can’t be for sure yet what caused the crash. They are launching a full investigation into the matter, he added.
Experts in the industry wonder if the right procedures were followed for the plane to be diverted. This is due to the position of the wrecked aircraft, which shows that the pilot went beyond safety margins. However, if reports that the plane lost contact with the airport are true, then it’s more than likely that the pilot didn’t get the warning to divert. More will be figured out when the black box from the plane is found.
