A British national who was born in Russia is in jail in the US state of Maine after she allegedly tried to bite a flight attendant on board a plane headed to London. She was reported to have taken prescription drugs, consumed a quantity of wine and then ingested liquid soap from the plane’s lavatory before attacking members of the cabin staff.
Prosecutors in Maine said that Galina Rusanova hit and kicked cabin crew members and fell to the floor, “snapping like a dog”, as she tried to bite a flight attendant’s leg.
On Friday, Rusanova appeared in court in Bangor, Maine, where she remains in custody pending an upcoming hearing in US District Court. She is charged with interference with a member of a flight crew and assault. If she is convicted, she could spend up to 20 years in prison.
According to the FBI, Rusanova traveled to Los Angeles to meet a man she had communicated with on the Internet, and was returning to the Britain on Wednesday when her flight was diverted to Bangor, Maine.
On the United Airlines flight from London to Los Angeles, the woman began to pester other passengers and was said to be speaking unintelligibly, appearing to be drunk. A flight attendant said that she watched as Rusanova drank liquid hand soap from a container that apparently came from a bathroom on the plane.
The woman was said to have become increasingly unruly and began to attack other passengers and members of the cabin crew who tried to restrain her.
