Airlines Cancel Libya Services

There have been a number of airlines that have canceled flights in and out of Libya now. Earlier this week, British Airways and bmi revealed that they were scrapping services to Tripoli from Tuesday. There was speculation that more carriers would follow, and they have.

This precedent and the violence in Libya has prompted Emirates to follow suit. They have suspended all services, effective immediately, from Tripoli. This will remain in effect until further notice, they said in a statement. They will operate only a few flights direct to Tunisia, they noted, but all others will be canceled. Passengers won’t be accepted for flights into the capital city from any airport, they added.

Alitalia said on Thursday that they have suspended flights to the city indefinitely due to security. The ability of passengers to get to embarkation gates at the capital’s airport has been compromised, while domestic and international phone connections aren’t working and security, passenger assistance and baggage handling is at risk.

Lufthansa has announced canceled services as well, but they are only suspending flights until Monday. They will advise further then, a spokesman said, depending on how the situation is going. KLM, which is part of the Air France-KLM group, said that they are canceling flights to Tripoli until next Wednesday. The carrier usually operates a service to the city every day, except Tuesday.

This comes at a time when governments around the world are doing all they can to evacuate nationals out the troubled country. This is due to Libyan authorities being given permission to open fire on protesters, whether they are being peaceful or not. This is a move that has been widely condemned.
