Airlines need to do more about lost luggage

A travel insurer has said that airlines need to let the travelling public know what efforts they intend to take to reduce the likelihood of losing passenger luggage.

InsureandGo has expressed its concern that lost luggage will not be a high priority for airlines struggling to survive in the current economic downturn.

The company added that airlines are currently not adequately reimbursing their customers for lost luggage and travel insurers are forced to fill the gap.

According to InsureandGo estimates, insurers in the UK paid out nearly £38 million last year to settle lost luggage claims. The company calculated that UK travel insurers receive over 33,000 lost or stolen luggage claims monthly.

With the aviation industry’s expectation that passenger numbers will double world-wide over the next decade, the number of claims would increase to as many as 53,000 per month by 2019.

Perry Wilson, the company’s founder, said: “Lost luggage is now the second most common travel insurance claim we receive after those for medical treatment abroad. We estimate that UK travel insurers receive 45 claims for lost luggage every hour and just over 1,000 a day.”

He went on to say: “We believe airlines need to do more to reduce the chances of losing their passengers’ luggage and they should be more open about what they are doing in this area.”
