Airlines to comply with stricter security checks for US bound passengers

SeniorPortfoliowhiteSix global airlines have so far confirmed they will be introducing measures to comply with demands from US authorities for stricter security checks. The airlines say passengers will be subjected to interviews or have to answer questionnaires as well as have their electronic devices checked over.

Air France, Lufthansa, EgyptAir, Emirates and Cathay Pacific all announced last week that the extra checks were being introduced immediately. The US has granted Royal Jordanian a temporary reprieve and it will introduce the enhanced screening just after the New Year.

The US has ordered the new passenger screening procedures to replace a ban on passengers carrying laptop computers and larger tablet devices in their cabin hand luggage. The new checks will eventually apply to the more than 2,000 international flights to the US every day.

The number of flights arriving in the US means at least 300,000 passengers every day will face some degree of inconvenience when they check in. US authorities say the checks will not just target overseas nationals and Americans will be vetted just as stringently.

An Air France spokesperson told reporters all US bound passengers would be getting questionnaires to fill out. The measures were introduced first at Paris Orly Airport last Thursday. Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport will follow suit this coming Thursday.

Emirates has issued an announcement asking passengers departing on US flights at Dubai International Airport to give themselves additional time for pre-screening interviews. Passengers transiting in Dubai will also be screened when they go to departure gates for US flights.
