Airport hotels are losing out

As we enter a time when air travel passenger numbers are starting to decline, airlines are reacting with reducing the frequency of some flights, canceling others for the winter months or scrapping routes that do not make much money altogether. Bear a thought for the airport hotels located in the UK that are beginning to feel the heat.

STR Global, who supplies hotels worldwide with data on market information and trends, has shown that two of London’s airports have shown some worrying figures. For the past two years. Gatwick Airport’s hotels have seen numbers decrease almost daily since the beginning of 2008 with the declines reaching two digits for year on year on the first six months of 2009. The hotels around Heathrow Airport have also seen a drop in numbers for April and May by over 12 per cent.

Some of the drop in percentage can be down to the increase of rooms available around the two airports but a lot will still have to do with less people flying and others that are forgoing their night at an airport hotel in favour of just driving on the day of travel.

The latest figures for year ending May 2009 shows that Heathrow’s passenger numbers has dropped by around four per cent compared to the same last year and Gatwick has lost more at just over ten per cent.
