Ground staff for Servisair at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport have returned to work after a deal was struck with their employers on Bank Holiday Monday. Servisair have agreed to withdraw the compulsory redundancies and instead have them open for volunteers and have agreed not to change the working contract of the remaining employees.
The strike has been in full force since the 20th August when 150 staff voted on industrial action. The mediator group Acas made the deal and all GMB union staff returned to work Tuesday morning at 04:00. The strike was getting into serious water late last week when GMB members in the airport fire service were consulting on supporting their counterparts with strike action, this would have closed the airport.
The operators of the airport said that they were pleased with the outcome of the talks on Monday and hoped that everything would return to normal. Servisair said that there was no disruption or risk to safety of passengers during the strike as they had drafted in extra support from managers at other Servisair businesses. Workers did picket one of the main routes to the airport, but they said it was never their intention to disrupt passengers.
