Airports provide luxury services to passengers

An increasing number of airports are deciding to introduce unconventional, luxury services and facilities, including massage therapy, casinos, showers and limousines, all aimed at not only wealthy corporate travellers, but middle-class flyers as well. Most recently, Helsinki’s international airport decided to establish an innovative “wellness center” at this European hub, which will likely be completed in 2009. Finland’s largest airport is currently undergoing an expansion, and the new section will feature the so-called “Helsinki Lounge,” where the focus will be on health and entertainment related services. The new terminal will reportedly include an innovative waiting area, wireless internet access, a business centre, as well as a new restaurant. In an effort to also make the airport more aesthetically-pleasing, it will incorporate an art gallery and an exhibition hall.

The airport’s new wellness centre-which will occupy a space that exceeds 1,580 sq. metres-will welcome not only business class passengers, but anyone looking for a little relaxation. This may be especially useful at the Helsinki airport, as a significant portion of passengers who use this hub are there to catch connecting flights to Asia. The entrance fee is reported to be modest, and the one time entry permits visitors to use an ice bath, a mineral bathing facility, as well as the sauna and a quiet room to relax or sleep. In addition to these facilities, massage and cosmetic care services ia also available for an additional fee. These new facilities will likely turn Helsinki’s airport into one of the most innovative and comfortable hubs in the world.
