Alamo Car Rental Steady Expansion since being created in 1974
Posted on: July 21st, 2007 by Garry RobertsonThe Alamo car rental company was created in Florida in 1974 with a substantial starting fleet of some one thousand cars. Business was conducted from four locations throughout the state. Growth was steady in the company’s early years and by the middle of the 1980’s Alamo had become one of the leading car rental companies operating in the United States. The company became known particularly for its innovative ideas and the use of the latest technology to speed up the whole car rental process for its customers.
In 1988 Alamo started to spread its wings with the establishment of outlets on the continent of Europe and in other parts of the world. Offices were opened at the main airports serving London; Heathrow and Gatwick. 1994 saw the Alamo brand appearing at airports in Frankfurt, Brussels and Munich. The business in the United Kingdom was expanded further and the German company Autohansa was acquired by Alamo. The holiday centres of Greece and Portugal had Alamo outlets by 1995. Expansion into Canada followed with a presence in Montreal and Vancouver being established.
From those relatively small beginnings in 1974 Alamo has grown to become one of the world’s major players in car rental. It now has a huge fleet of some 180,000 vehicles of all types which provide services to some 15 million customers annually. The company operates from 293 offices in the United States and now has 955 outlets in European countries.
