American Airlines cracks down on carry-on items
Posted on: June 16th, 2008 by Dave AndersonAs passengers try desperately to avoid paying the $15 each way fee for checked luggage on domestic flights operated by American Airlines, US Airways and United Airlines, many are becoming more adept at packing carry-on bags to the breaking point with clothing, or are simply flying with larger carry-on items altogether. Yet these passengers would be well advised to start simply packing light instead of bringing bags aboard planes that barely fit into the overhear compartments, since airlines are getting ready to take a tougher approach than ever before to carry-on items, starting this summer.
According to an MSNBC report, American Airlines appears to be the first carrier that is preparing to tackle the problem of ever increasing carry-on items, due to the new checked luggage fees. Tim Wagner, an American spokesperson, confirmed that extra staff members have been hired for the busy summer season and that a number of them will be specifically tasked with the job of monitoring carry-on bag sizes at specific airport check points. If a carry-on item is deemed to be too large, the passenger will be required to return to the check-in desk. As a general rule of thumb, cabin luggage may not exceed 45 linear inches. “The carry-on limit is no secret and customers need not try to skirt the rules,” Wagner told journalists.
Those travelling through the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport are advised to be especially careful when it comes to packing carry-on items, as American Airlines is likely to be especially stringent at this hub when it comes to inspections. Since most flights at a given terminal are operated by American, it makes the monitoring of cabin luggage much easier.
