The crash landing of an American Airlines flight in Jamaica on the 22nd of December was caused by a mixture of bad weather conditions and what has been described as ‘unserviceable airport equipment’. American Airlines Flight 331 crash landed after overshooting the runway in inclement weather conditions just before Christmas Day and further flights landing at the airport from foreign carriers have been warned to exercise extreme care and caution until the report into the cause of the crash by the NTSB has been finalised.
It has also been recommended that flights should not be diverted to Jamaica under any circumstances until the final report comes in. Jamaican authorities have been accused of being callous and blas? about the whole situation and since the downgrade of Jamaica’s airports by the FAA, the state of emergency equipment is severely questionable. The recent accident simply highlights the need for an improvement in the ground facilities and a rise in aviation standards in the Caribbean island.
Holidaymakers to Jamaica have been urged to put their holiday plans on hold until after the final report has come out and people are now frantically trying to change their bookings. Corrective procedures will then be put into place to ensure that the airport is safe enough to accept foreign carriers. The airport remains open to incoming and outgoing flights and it is unclear how long it will be before the report is released and the corrective measures are put into place.
