American Airlines details cutbacks
Posted on: June 27th, 2008 by Samantha WilliamsEarlier in the month American Airlines announced that it will cut on flights later this year at many U.S. airports, including its hubs in Chicago and Dallas, in an attempt to cope with the soaring prices of fuel.
The largest carrier in the U.S. provided more details this past week about the reductions in capacity that it had announced last month.
American plans to reduce the number of departures from Chicago O’Hare Airport by 28 flights, and its sister airline American Eagle will cut 34 flights, all beginning in September.
At the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, American’s other major hub, it will reduce the number of departures by 19, and Eagle will cut 23 flights.
The carrier also plans to cut eight daily departures at the St. Louis airport and five at LaGuardia Airport in New York. In combination, American Eagle and AmericanConnection will reduce capacity by 35 flights, and Eagle will cut 37 at LaGuardia.
The Fort Worth-based airline said previously that it was closing all operations at Oakland, California, and also at Stansted Airport in London this September. In its most recent announcement it indicated that it would also discontinue service to Barranquilla, Colombia.
Gerard Arpey, American’s chairman and chief executive, revealed last month that the carrier is likely to eliminate thousands of jobs, resulting from this reduction in capacity. The company has not disclosed an actual figure yet, however.
