Arran rebel group claims more attacks on tourists in Spain in the pipeline

Barcelona BeachAnarchist rebels in Spain say they will carry out more violent attacks in their war on mass tourism. Different factions of the Arran Paisos Catalans (usually Arran) group have already targeted tourists in outrages staged in Barcelona and Majorca.

Speaking to media sources, Arran spokesperson Laura Flores said the fight was not over. She added that there had been protests and attacks in the past and this would be carried forward into the future.

In a post on Twitter, Arran says the aim of the protests is to put a stop to the mass tourism which is spoiling Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The post claims too many tourists are devastating whole neighbourhoods and communities and consigning working people to lives of misery.

The first incident in Arran’s campaign took place two weeks ago in the Majorcan city of Palma. Rebels stormed a restaurant and threw confetti at diners and over their meals. They lit flares and unfurled banners which said tourism was killing the island.

Last week in Barcelona, an Arran cabal swooped on a tourist bus. Brits on board said later that the group seemed like terrorists and that they had slashed the vehicle’s tyres and plastered revolutionary propaganda on it.

Further attacks saw the tyres of bicycles rented by tourists cut in Barcelona. Another Arran group in Majorca ran riot and stormed through restaurants and across yachts while letting off smoke bombs and shouting slogans.

Council and tourism officials in Barcelona and Majorca have slated the attacks. They say it is a form of xenophobia and that they will move to prevent any more attacks. Tourism director Pilar Carbonell says endangering people and property is definitely not the way forward.
