Austrian Airlines picks up awards
Posted on: August 19th, 2008 by Benjamin TierAustrian Airlines has picked up several important awards, in recognition of the quality of service that the Central European carrier offers to its passengers. These distinctions could not have come at a better time, considering that the Austrian government is currently trying to sell its 43 percent stake in the airline and must make the loss-generating company seem as attractive as possible to potential bidders. What makes this even more important is that the awards were administered and offered by Skytrax, one of the most recognized consultancy groups in the commercial aviation industry. Austrian Airlines received first place for business class catering on long-haul routes and came in at third place in terms of economy cabin catering on long-haul flights. At a time when many carriers are cutting back on complimentary meal service, especially in economy class, Austrian’s current distinction in this category stands out even more. Even more impressive was the fact that Austria’s flag carrier was the only European airline to make it to the top five in the economy class catering category.
In addition to catering services, Austrian also received top marks for the quality, helpfulness and professionalism of its cabin crew, scooping up the first place prize. Afred Oetsch, Austrian Airlines’ chief executive, told journalists that his carrier continues to “inspire” passengers thanks to the top quality service offered on all flights. The airline chief also pointed out that Austrian is in the process of celebrating its fiftieth anniversary and as such, these awards come at an especially important time for the airline.
