Avis has opened its newest Chinese outlet at airports in Beijing and Shanghai, just ahead of the Summer Olympic Games, which will see tourism to China increase dramatically. Passengers arriving to Beijing International Airport will be able to collect their rental car from the Avis counter located at Terminal 3, while all those landing at the Pudong Airport, in Shaghai, may proceed to Terminal 2 to pick up their vehicle. In addition to adding new locations, Avis is now also offering clients a longer list of rental services in China. For example, customer may book both self-drive and chauffeured vehicles, as well as basic hotel and airport transfers. The minimum rental period in the case of both self-drive and chauffeured car hires is set at one day.

Avis currently operates 14 outlets in major Chinese cities, and concentrates it business around some of the country’s largest airport, including hubs in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Avis’s operations in China take the form of a partnership between Avis Europe and a local organization. The two have teamed up to form the Anji Car Rental & Leasing Corporation, with each side controlling fifty percent of the firm. The company is growing steadily and now employs a staff of 1,400 and maintains a fleet of 2,600 rental cars. According to Avis’s own estimates, this joint company is the largest provider of western-style car rental services in China. The clientele is comprised in large part of Chinese and foreign officials and businesspeople, although the leisurely customer base is also expanding.
