Avis Europe has said that it will levy a charge on customers who fail to cancel their bookings.
The rental car company will be the first to impose “no-show” charges, although it claims it will bring the car hire sector in line with cruises, flights, hotels and tours, which all levy such fees.
Rental car customers who do not cancel their reservation by the time the vehicle is scheduled to be picked up, or do not show up at the rental counter within 24 hours after the scheduled time, will be charged £40.
The new fee will be rolled out progressively across Avis Europe’s network this year, beginning with bookings made by individual customers online and through the company’s call centre.
In order to accomplish this, Avis will ask for a valid form of payment when the booking is made.
Wolfgang Neumann, the group’s commercial director, said: “We are taking this action to improve vehicle availability for our customers, particularly during peak season, and to use our fleet more cost effectively. Charges for cancelling a rental booking are 100% avoidable if customers think ahead and that’s something we believe this measure will encourage them to do.”
He added: “It is also a fairer system for customers who diligently collect their cars and simply echoes standard practices across the rest of the travel industry.”
