Even with all the negative publicity surrounding the opening of its new terminal at Heathrow Airport, British Airways has been named Britain’s fifth most popular brand.
The new ranking by the Superbrands Council were just released, and saw Google named as the top brand in the country.
The Superbrands announcement came as a rare but welcome bit of good news for the airline, which has just released its plan to reduce services by three to five per cent across its network, due to the staggering costs of jet fuel.
In the travel industry, the next highest rankings were received by Hilton Hotels, which placed 20th. Also in top 100 were Eurostar, at number 27, Virgin Atlantic at 70 and Thomas Cook Travel at number 72.
Thomas Cook was the only travel operator making the top 100. Simon Carter, executive director for marketing for Thomas Cook, said that the company placed far ahead of its rivals because it was seen as an advocate for consumers – as in its current campaigning for an additional bank holiday.
“For the past three years, we have been steadily moving up the rankings and are now at our highest ever position in the Top 100. Best of all is the huge and ever widening gap between ourselves and the next tour operator in the list. In the whole Superbrands survey, no other first place brand beats it second place competitor by that number of positions, showing how head and shoulders our brand is above our competitors.”
One other tour operator placed in the top 500, and that was Kuoni, which came in 340th.
