BA website challenges budget carriers with value calculator

In a challenge to the airfare deals boasted by low-cost carriers, British Airways launched a new “value calculator” on its website that compares actual passenger costs on budget carriers with its own.

No-frills airlines, such as easyJet and Ryanair, charge passengers for checked baggage, for example, in order to keep ticket prices down. Some also charge passengers to check in and for priority boarding privileges.

British Airways announced that it would publish cost-comparison figures online so that passengers could see exactly how much they would pay to travel on budget carriers flying similar routes.

Richard Tams, the BA sales chief for the UK and Ireland, said: “With BA, the price you see is the price you pay. It’s been well documented that some of the no-frills carriers charge for a range of ‘extras’ that we consider to be part of our core service, from checking in a bag to food and drinks on board.”

He went on to say: “We’re just making these transparent for customers. On a round trip, customers can be paying up to £375 on Ryanair and £79 on easyJet for these extras in addition to their fare.”
