BMI to install new self-service check-in
Posted on: February 8th, 2010 by Martin FellowesThe British airline carrier, BMI, have this week announced a deal with computer firm IBM to launch a new system of self-service check-in desks at the bases across the UK. The three and a half year deal will see their passengers be able to check-in online via un-manned kiosks at the airports. In addition a service will also allow passenger to check-in online making the process a whole little simpler and quicker. IBM will be providing support services for the system and it will also be monitored by a team of skilled technicians to make sure everything is running okay.
The new system is aimed at passengers that are looking for more efficient ways of checking-in and avoiding the huge queues you can get at peak times across UK airports. The system will also allow passengers to check-in on to onward flights and arrange their allocated seats like any normal check-in service. The new kiosks have already gone live across some airports including Heathrow, Glasgow and Belfast and are so far proving a great addition to those that are brave enough to try them.
Many airlines across the UK and Ireland are leaning towards self-service check-in desks as a way of alleviating the endless queues. Ryanair will now only let people check-in online prior to arriving at the airport and penalties for not doing this is somewhat high. Research out in 2008 has predicted that more 65 per cent of airlines will have facilities for passengers to check-in themselves at airports by the end of this year.
