Search crews off the coast of Brazil have located bodies and debris from the Air France Airbus A330-200 that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean last week with 228 people on board.

Brazilian air force spokesman, Col Jorge Amaral, reported that the bodies of two men were recovered from the area where it is thought the plane went down. The site is 400 miles from the Fernando de Noronha islands, located off the north-eastern coast of Brazil.

The spokesman added that a suitcase was also found, which contained a plane ticket for the Air France flight.

All of the 228 people onboard, including a baby, seven children, are believed to have died in what is the worst aviation disaster the world has seen since 2001.

It was learned that AF flight 447 had gone down last Sunday night as it was on route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, when French investigators received 24 error messages from the plane’s communications, including an indication that its autopilot was not functioning.

Col Amaral commented: “It was confirmed with Air France that the ticket number corresponds to a passenger on the flight,” adding: “At 9:10am, a ship spotted the first body. The body was recovered and it was confirmed to be male.”

At around 11:30am, local time, a second body was recovered.
