The month of June has not been a good one for Boeing, and it hasn’t gotten any better on the news that Qantas was cancelling 15 of the 787-9 Dreamliners it has on order.

Jetstar, the Qantas low-cost subsidiary, was set to receive the first of the 787s next year. Qantas has also delayed the delivery of its first 15 Dreamliners by four years.

At the Paris Air Show earlier this month, rival aircraft manufacturer Airbus clearly won out over Boeing in terms of new orders.

Not long afterward, Boeing announced that there would be further delays to test flights of the 787 Dreamliner, after structural problems were uncovered by the company’s engineers.

A statement was issued by Boeing, noting that discussions between Qantas and Boeing began a few months ago and the Qantas decision was not influenced by the postponement of the first Dreamliner test flight.

Boeing’s statement went on to say: “Even with the reduction, the Qantas Group jointly remains the biggest airline customer for 787 family aircraft. (Qantas Group and ANA each have ordered 50 787s.)”

Qantas noted that its decision to cancel the orders for 15 Dreamliners would reduce its capital expenditures by $US3 billion, according to the aircraft’s current list price.
