Boeing received 662 new plane orders in 2008

In 2008, the Boeing Company received orders for 662 additional commercial aircraft, increasing its backlog of orders that have not yet been fulfilled to more than 3,700.

The company’s best selling plane continued to be the Next-Generation 737, which saw 484 orders last year. Demand also remained strong for the new 787 Dreamliner, with 93 ordered in 2008, mostly by customers in the Middle East.

“While we clearly faced obstacles, 2008 also was a time of accomplishment,” noted Scott Carson, the president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes president, who added that the number of planes ordered in 2008 was the eighth largest on record.

Other aircraft ordered included the twin-aisle 777, which saw 54 orders from customers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Twenty-eight 767-300ERs were ordered, and three 747-8 Intercontinentals were also on the list.

During last year, Boeing delivered 375 planes to customers around the world, including 290 737s – six of which were Boeing Business Jets, 61 777s, 14 747s and 10 767s.

Aircraft deliveries in 2008 were impact by a strike lasting for several weeks, halting commercial production for that period of time.
