Early reports from the BEA (the French air incident investigation bureau) suggest that the Air France plane bound for Paris was intact before it hit the water. “The plane appears to have hit the surface of the water in flying position with a strong vertical acceleration,” said Alain Bouillard from BEA.

He went on to say that he believed the plane struck the ocean on its belly, and that life jackets had not been worn. This is the first inquiry so far into the incident, which has claimed 228 lives.

The accident of Air France Flight 447 on 1st June is the worst recorded in Air France history.

There had been early reports suggesting that there was a problem with the Airbus’s speed sensors or pitot tubes which could have caused the plane to stall or fly extremely fast, resulting in a high altitude break up.

The black box from this flight has still to be recovered and on 17th June Brazil called off their search. France however, still have their submarine and boats in the area on a final mission to find the elusive box.

Investigators are sifting through the wreckage that has been recovered in the hope of finding the cause of the plane crash, while autopsies are being carried out on the bodies that were recovered.
