British Airways flight schedules back to normal

BA Heathrow T5A spokesperson for British Airways announced yesterday that flights were back to normal following a systems meltdown at the weekend. The update noted that flights from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports would be operating to timetables effective yesterday morning.

It carried on by saying the airline’s IT systems were up and running and BA flights from other airports around the world were also flying to schedule. The statement did warn that it might take a little time to reunite passengers caught up in the chaos over the weekend with their luggage.

The airline’s computer systems failed on Saturday and a backup system did not kick in either. The crash meant the airline was not able to operate flights from Heathrow or Gatwick and another 170 airports in 70 countries were affected.

On Sunday, the situation improved somewhat and only 200 Heathrow flights were cancelled but Gatwick’s timetables were in complete disarray. At a press conference on Monday, BA CEO Alex Cruz blamed the IT systems failure on a power surge.

Cruz apologised to passengers for the disruptions to their flights and plans. He also noted the systems failure was definitely not the work of cyber attackers. Responding to allegations the failure was due to BA outsourcing its technical operations to India, the CEO claimed this was simply not true.

The IT crash affected 75,000 passengers in 170 countries and could leave the airline facing a bill to the tune of £100 million or more. Under EU regulations, each affected passenger is entitled to up to €600 (£521) for a delayed flight.
