British Airways Increases Fuels Surcharges
Posted on: June 8th, 2007 by Robert BergersonFurther increases in the cost of oil have led British Airways to increase its long haul fuel surcharge. The rise will come into effect on June 13th 2007.
Long haul flights of less than nine hours will see a surcharge increase from £33 to £38 per sector (double for return flights). Flights longer than nine hours will attract an increase from £38 to £43 per sector (double for return flights).
The fuel surcharge for short haul flights will remain unchanged at £8 per sector. £16 for a return flight.
British Airways’ commercial director Robert Boyle stated, “The cost of fuel has again risen significantly in recent weeks. Unfortunately we have little choice but to pass on some of this extra cost to our customers. Fuel continues to be our second largest cost and we expect our fuel bill this year to be more than £2 billion. The price of oil continues to be extremely volatile. Therefore we believe the fuel surcharge continues to be the most transparent way for our customers to understand what they are paying and allows us to adjust the direct cost to our customers appropriately, whether that is increasing or reducing the fuel surcharge as we did on some of our long haul flights in January.”
Fuel surcharge increases at a similar level are to be imposed by British Airways in their markets outside the United Kingdom.
