British Airways jumps on incredible shrinking seat bandwagon

British Airways 777British Airways has announced seats on aircraft flying from London Gatwick Airport will soon be smaller and allow for more intimate experiences. Cabins for World Traveller, AKA economy class, will be reconfigured to increase the number of seats in each row from nine to ten.

The increase in seats abreast will mean passengers will have an inch less space to spread their arms out and park their posteriors. The first of BA’s aircraft to join the global phenomenon of the incredible shrinking airline seat are ten of the Boeing 777 fleet.

These are deployed on routes from Gatwick to the likes of Kingston, Jamaica and the Mexican resort town of Cancun. The schedule for the Boeing 777 cabin revamps will see six of the ten refurbished by autumn and the remainder before next spring.

BA network and alliances head Sean Doyle told media sources the revamps would enable the aircraft to carry more passengers and it would be a win-win for travellers as the end result would be cheaper fares. He claimed the renewed World Traveller cabins would be intimate and yet still preserve the bespoke service BA customers loved.

The cabin refurbishments are not all bad news for flyers as they will add features to enhance the travel experience. Larger screens for in-flight media players are literally the biggest improvement and will increase in size by more than 50 per cent to 10 inches.

For premium economy, World Traveller Plus, the screen size will be 12 inches. With the bigger screens comes access to audio libraries set to quadruple in size. The new seats will be equipped with personal device charging points, six-way headrests and collapsible armrests.
