British Airways launches flights from Malaga again
Posted on: June 6th, 2008 by Dave AndersonBritish Airways has decided to once again operate flights from Malaga, following a decade-long pause, when the United Kingdom’s flag carrier was not formally present at this popular holiday destination. At the time, BA decided to let GB Airways operate direct flights to London from this location, which offered a total of three trips a day, starting in 1997. At the time, GB Airways served as a BA franchise partner on this route.
Yet last year, British Airways found itself in a predicament, as easyJet-one of the largest discount airlines in Europe-decided to buy up GB Airways, thus effectively leaving BA unrepresented in Malaga. As such, BA had to quickly find a way to recover the landing slots that it had ceded more than a decade ago. The flag carrier managed to do just this and it has now also announced the reopening of its direct London to Malaga route. BA essentially scooped up GB Airways’ old landing slots.
Continuing in the footsteps of GB Airways, BA will also offer a total of three flights per day, with two scheduled to connect Malaga to London’s Gatwick Airport, and another to Heathrow. The Gatwick flights will depart at 7.35am and at 1.10pm, while the one to Heathrow is scheduled to leave at 8.20pm each evening. BA seems to recognize that these are not the most convenient flight times, but the carrier has suggested that in the future it may be able to improve on the schedule.
Most of the daily flights are expected to be around 80 percent full and approximately 720 passengers will take the route each day.
