British FCO issues safety advisory for Cape Verde islands

aaaThe UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has just released an updated travel advisory for Britons heading off to the Cape Verde islands. The FCO advice says there has been a recent spike in the number of reports of muggings, sexual assaults and burglaries there.

It noted that attacks and burglaries on Sal and Boa Vista, the two main destinations for Brits, had increased significantly. The advisory cautioned people to be alert to what was happening around them when walking along Praia Santa Monica, Praia de Chaves and other beaches on Boa Vista Island as well as Sal.

The FCO says holidaymakers should deposit their valuables in room or hotel safes and definitely not go out with chunks of cash on them or while wearing showy jewellery or accessories. Other advice included staying out of unlighted precincts at night and keeping away from gangs of children.

The advice also noted the emergency contact number for Cape Verde’s police, 132, but warned response times were likely to be a lot slower than in the UK. The number of Britons visiting Cape Verde is rising and the latest figures show a 13 per cent increase between 2015 and 2016.

Commenting on the FCO’s new safety warnings, a lawyer with holiday insurance experts Simpson Millar explained that Cape Verde was the new up and coming holiday hotspot but poverty was still a major problem. Nolan Mortimer added that the islanders, including youngsters, thought visiting tourists were rich and could be relieved of their belongings and cash without too much trouble.
