On holiday, people tend to do crazy things that they might not otherwise do at home. For Brits visiting the Flamingo Oasis Hotel in Benidorm, this includes camping by the pool to grab a sun bed. In fact, this has become such a sensation at the Flamingo Oasis Hotel, that people have been uploading YouTube videos of it and calling it the “sun-lounger Olympics.”
The pool at this four-star hotel opens at 8:30 a.m. every day. Before the gates open, there are security guards standing by and a line of people building up. As soon as the gate opens, there is a huge stampede of tourists rushing in to grab as many chairs as they can.
To give people an idea of just how many people rush into the pool area, the Flamingo Oasis Hotel has 398 rooms. At any given time, the staff could be catering to around 1,200 guests. They attempt to make it a fun and entertaining holiday for everyone. Although not all of these people could fit in the pool area, hundreds are usually seen rushing in during the early morning.
One British guest staying at the hotel said that she had never seen anything like it in her life. People started to gather around the entrance of the pool at around 8 a.m. Within two minutes of the gates opening, all of the lounge chairs were gone. The security guards are unable to keep order; there are just too many people. One person nearly got knocked over.
This hotel is popular with people from all over the world, so not all of the people acting like this are British, right? Well, according to the hotel, around 90 percent of the people who stay at the hotel are English. The last 10 percent are a mix of Dutch, Spanish and German.
Many guests complain about this experience on TripAdvisor. One review says that they only got one lounge chair during the two days of their stay. If guests are not willing to wait in line for nearly 45 minutes to get a spot by the pool, they won’t get a chair. Being at the pool isn’t even relaxing because it’s so overcrowded.
Another review on Trip Advisor says that it’s impossible to get sun beds. The only way is to wait for the guards to move and let the stampede of people in. At this point, it’s every man for himself. People are throwing sun beds and pushing people like it’s the end of the world.
One of the hotel receptionists, Michael Pattison, said that the race for lounge chairs has become somewhat of a feature at the hotel. He said that it’s hard to come up with any other system to hand out the beds, and that is why people are forced to deal with the rush in the early morning.
