A young boy from the UK was killed and eight additional Britons were injured in the crash of a tourist flight in Venezuela, according to a report from the Foreign Office.

Thomas Horne, six years of age, died in the crash. His parents and a number of other tourists were on board the small plane when it crashed in the south of Venezuela, near Canaima.

The tourists were on route to the popular destination of Angel Falls.

A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that the injured passengers had been airlifted to the nearest hospital, in Ciudad Bolivar.

The spokesperson said: “The plane was carrying tourists visiting Angel Falls. We can confirm one British national died in the crash.”

June and Chris Holman, the boy’s aunt and uncle, said that his parents, Dave and Jane Horne, were completely devastated by his death.

Mrs Holman commented: “Following the tragic death of Thomas, the thoughts of us all are with his parents Jane and Dave at this very sad time. I am sure you can appreciate that there is nothing worse than losing a loved one, especially not a young child with their whole life ahead of them.”

She went on to say: “I trust you will respect the families wish for privacy at this difficult time.”
