Budding football player dies from head injury

A teenage footballer who sustained head injures during an under 15s match died as a result of natural causes, according to the coroner’s office that looked over his body.

Huw Thatcher, aged 15, was representing Hepworth United Juniors in their match at the weekend when the incident occurred. The High School pupil was immediately rushed to hospital, which is where he died later.

First team coach and a family friend, Mr Nigel Bowers, told the press how the youngster was a great guy and will be tremendously missed by all of those that he ever came into contact with. Mr Bowers said around 200 of Huw’s fellow pupils and teammates and gathered in Holmfirth the day after his death so that they could pay their tributes to him.

Mr Bowers said that Huw’s Dad Nick was also one of the coaches at his football club. I’ve known Nick for years and he is just devastated, attempting to hold things together as they have a daughter a lot younger than Huw was.

In her statement, Gail Howe, who is the acting head teacher of Holmfirth High School, which Huw attended, highlighted the fact that the teenager’s death had unfortunately left the institution’s community “devastated”.

Huw was a memorable year 10 student – intelligent yet also popular while being respected by his peers, Howe explained. He was also polite, she continued, and conscientious with a cheeky smile. He will be sadly missed, it was concluded.
