The head of the American operations of British Airways (BA) Simon Talling-Smith, has suggested that it might take five years for the business class flying market to recover back into full swing.

The higher end of flying like business and first class has long been BAs big earner and with the current recession forcing companies to place their executives back in economy or even cancelling flights altogether in favour of phone calls, it is no wonder all airlines are struggling along. All airlines will now have to start trying to build that relationship with business travellers again.

“BAs view is that it will take quite a long time, potentially more than five years, before the full value of the business market returns. Right now businesses are putting more people into economy class,” said Mr Talling-Smith. He acknowledged that it could take more time than predicted for traffic in the higher classes to pick up, but was confident that it would.

BAs main emphasis now must be to recruit back that lost revenue from the business class travellers. They have had some great offers for business class seats recently, like two for the price of one deals and some transatlantic flights being slashed by almost 40 per cent.
