CAB might be devestated

The UK’s Citizens Advice Bureau service might be devastated due to the budget cuts, the chief of the organisation has warned.

Across England and Wales, a number of centres will be closed as councils look into ways to save money and decide funding for local services related to the CAB. The group’s chief executive Gillian Guy has said that the service might be looking at a 45% drop for funding as a direct result of cuts from local and central governments.

The collation has said that current funding for CAB is haphazard but that such services are important and must be supported. At present, local authorities provide the bulk of the funding for CAB and there are set to be average cuts made of 10%.

Many channels of the central government cash will be stopping also, and Ms Guy is of the belief that such a scenario will be devastating for all of those concerned. Already, all the bureauxs in the country’s second largest city Birmingham will shut in February after its council cut support to the project.

For UK citizens, the CAB service gives legal advice as well as counsel on welfare and debt issues. Ironically, at a time cuts will be made, demand for its services are more than likely to double at the least as public spending becomes further squeezed.

In addition to this, the coalition plans to slash 174 quangos and then merge 118  – meaning that the CAB will become expected to handle more jobs and take on more responsibilities.
