The year 2010 has so far not been one to saviour for the Japanese vehicle manufacturer, Toyota. On Wednesday they had to put in a recall order of more than one million vehicles over problems with their mats. This is on top of another 2.3 million trucks and cars being recalled and sales suspended related also to problems of sudden acceleration. Some of the major players in the car rental market have this week pulled eight different types of Toyota vehicles from their fleet until the problem is fully resolved by the car maker.
The floor mat recall was initiated in the fourth quarter of 2009 and has so far claimed 5.4 million vehicles. The concerns about the floor mat trapping the accelerator pedal has been linked to 2,000 thousands complaints in the last six months. There have also been 19 deaths through Toyota cars suddenly accelerating that some have linked with faulty cars.
The move to halt sales of eight types of cars and vans by the manufacturer is seen as a sign that Toyota want to resolve this in full immediately. However, the part in question is being replaced by the firm who are sending replacements to Toyota assembly plants. They have said that this has been blown out of proportion and only around a dozen complaints were received.
Work will carry on to try and resolve the problem and Toyota believe it will not be long before their brands of cars are back on the market again.
