Car rentals on the increase in the UK

A motoring expert has said that as UK households look to manage their expenses in the current economic climate, rental car companies are starting to see businesses improve.

According to the results of recent survey conducted by rental car company Europcar, more Britons are electing to rent a car when they need one rather than making the financial commitment of buying one, finding the rental option can be much more reasonable.

The group marketing manager for Europcar Australia, Ashley Jurberg, said he was not surprised by the findings of the survey, and noted also that holidaymakers are more frequently taking breaks at destinations that are closer to home.

He went on to explain: “For families surviving on one income because of job cuts or those who have been made redundant because of the downturn, often car ownership is one of the first expenses to be shed.”

The Europcar executive noted that rentals at the company’s stores in Australia have been strong. “I believe that it is a result of people taking ‘stay-cations’ close to home at destinations they can drive to,” Jurberg said, adding: “Many people will hire a vehicle as it often is cheaper and safer. With a rented vehicle you know you’re getting a car that undergoes regular and rigorous maintenance checks.”
