car2go North America is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its launch in San Diego, California. The city is the home of the first all-electric network for car sharing on the continent. Since its launch in the city last November, over 125,000 people have signed up with car2go to become members of its growing network. These members have taken over 200,000 trips in the operator’s smart fortwo electric drive vehicles.
Before car2go was launched in San Diego, there were about 800 electric cars in the city. Then when the car sharing operator launched, it added 300 smart fortwo electric vehicles to this, increasing the total number of electric cars in the city by almost 40%. Since the network has been introduced the San Diego electric vehicle community has grown to almost 13,500 electric car users, making the city one of the world’s leaders for these types of motorists.
The 300 smart fortwo cars made available by car2go are being used today by more and more people. After launching in San Diego with members taking about 500 trips a week, now the average weekly trips have increased to around 5,000 and 6,000. These trips last less than half-an-hour on average, with the average distance driven being between three and seven miles.
As part of the one-year anniversary celebration, car2go held a ribbon cutting ceremony last night to reveal a new East Village Charging Depot. This demonstrates their commitment to bringing the City of San Diego the best mobility solutions for urban communities. The new depot is equipped with 30 BLINK electric car charging stations and will allow the Fleet Team for car2go to charge the 300 vehicles during off-peak periods. This will increase smart fortwo vehicle availability during peak times.
The Fleet Team already recharges cars throughout the day, but car2go members are also asked to return their hired smart fortwo to a charging depot at the end of their trips if the charge level is below 20%. There are about 45 public charging stations located across the Home Area, but the new charging depot will almost double that total. This is another example of the operator’s commitment to bring its members the most suitable car sharing options.
car2go president and chief executive Nicolas Cole says that they are marking a very important, historical moment in modern transport and electric car adoption with this one-year anniversary celebration in San Diego. The city and car2go members have embraced a completely new mobility solution over the year, and residents have adapted their way of life to consist of a mix of green transport options. They are setting a great example for the rest of the world in relation to zero emissions mobility.
He added that it’s car2go’s mission to deliver the most fun, flexible and convenient transport options to their members. The launch of their new charging depot will bring a whole new level of ease-of-use and availability to their San Diego members. They anticipate receiving positive feedback from the community.
Aside from the ribbon cutting ceremony, car2go is also offering potential San Diego members a lifetime membership and 30 minutes of driving for only $10. Anyone interested can register online with the FALL2012 promotion code.
