car2go North America is preparing for a launch in Seattle, Washington on December 19, when its thousands of network members will have access to 330 smart fortwo vehicles in the city. The cars will be available all day, every day, and residents who aren’t members yet can already register online.
This car sharing service provides city residents and visitors with a convenient and flexible free-floating network of vehicles that can be hired on-demand to get them from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’. Anyone who registers on the car2go website gets unlimited access to the smart fortwos with their membership card, which is scanned through the car’s windscreen to unlock it and begin the rental period. car2go can be used whether the member has made a reservation or not, and the vehicles can be hired for as long as the user needs it. They don’t have to return the car to a specific location at a certain time either.
car2go’s smart fortwos can be found for hire via the company’s online vehicle finder, its smartphone app, calling the car centre, or just by spotting one sitting in a parking bay within the Home Area. The vehicle can be rented by the minute, hour or day. By-the-minute hires only charge for the length of the rental, while hourly and daily hires offer discounted rates. Then when members are done with their hire, they can park the car in any non-restricted or on-street, residential neighbourhood parking space in the service area. The rates are also inclusive of parking fees, maintenance, fuel and insurance.
Residents who are considering becoming car2go members for the first time will want to do so soon. For a limited period, the company is waiving the one-time $35 registration charge, as well as allotting new members 30 free driving minutes on their accounts. People who want to take advantage of this need to use promotion code SOUND when they sign up.
car2go North America president and chief executive Nicholas Cole says that this will give the City of Seattle access to the market’s most technologically advanced car sharing network. The company’s smart fortwo is specially designed with technology to allow a whole community to collaboratively drive and share vehicles. Members will have access to a car by just swiping a card, allowing them to drive the vehicle as long as they want or need.
Cole continued to explain that members will be able to end their hire anywhere in the network’s Home Area, at which time it will instantly become available for the next member to rent. This initiative has proven successful in the other 17 cities it operates around the world and is a great complement to Seattle’s existing network of public transport. They look forward to bringing the new system to the city, he added.
Mike McGinn, the mayor of Seattle, said that car2go will be one of the many ways people can travel around the city. He added that they welcome the innovative transport option for the city’s residents and visitors. City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen welcomed the initiative as well, saying that one of his goals has been providing residents with more transport solutions that make travel around the city cheaper and easier. Car sharing is affordable and convenient for those who wish to reduce or remove the cost of owning a vehicle.
