Charters from China boost Far North Queensland tourism

Four charter flights have been organized by China Southern Airlines to transport tourists from Guangzhou, China, to Queensland next week for the Chinese New Year holiday.

The carrier is using a Boeing 777-200 for the service, and the first of the flights is scheduled to arrive in Cairns on 28 January.

China’s GZL International Travel Service and the Guangdong LB Air Service Company jointly chartered the flights, which will arrive over a two-day period, bringing approximately 1,500 Chinese visitors to Far North Queensland.

“Australia is an increasingly popular destination for travellers from China, and tropical Far North Queensland provides not only an exciting and different holiday opportunity but a great respite from the northern hemisphere winter,” commented James Liu, who is the general manager in Australia for China Southern Airlines.

He added: “This injects a significant amount of money into the Australian tourism industry and provides valuable exposure in China for this great region of Australia.”

The charter flights to Far North Queensland have been organized at a time when China Southern is considering initiating scheduled service to Brisbane, as a part of its plan for international expansion.

In addition to Australia, the carrier is also planning to introduce service to popular long-haul destinations, including London and New York.
