Chinese authorities ban tourists from entering Tibet

The Chinese government has placed bans on all foreign tourists from being able to enter Tibet on what will soon be the third anniversary of the violent anti-government protests that took place across the region.

Anyone intending to travel to the disputed region will require a special permit, however they will be refused to all foreigners. The ban might last for up anything up to three months.

Travel agencies across Tibet say they have received strict orders to not allow foreign tourists get into Tibet in March. Xizang Tourist General Company, located in Lhasa, the region’s capital, told Western news sources that foreign tourists can’t come to Tibet throughout March and April and concerns remain over May while those working in the local tourism industry await notification of changes to the rules.

Three years ago in Lhasa, violent anti-government took over the city and at least 22 people were killed by the authorities. The Chinese government pointed to the Dalai Lama’s followers for causing the unrest – those who wish to see Tibet separate from China.  Following the riots, foreign tourists were banned from entering Tibet for a year and have since had a ban on them from being able to enter the area around the 14th of March each year.

The top official in the region, Zhang Qingli, confirmed new restrictions earlier this month, however he blamed potential overcrowding and cold weather for pushing the Communist party into placing the ban on foreigners.
