Comic Relief raises record amount on Red Nose Day

A record amount of £74 million was raised for Comic Relief yesterday on the 23rd Red Nose Day, with the amount set to rise still higher.

Yesterday , That Day was here again – the annual charity extravaganza on and off British TV where anything goes as long as it raises money for Comic Relief and its children. Famous faces from all fields on hand to swell the coffers included David Cameron, Gordon Brown, Susan Boyle, Gavin and Stacey star James Corden and a host of other names, either in person or on film.

Almost, but not quite, the highlight of the night was Gordon Brown dancing with boy band JLS after the government had pledged £10 million to Comic Relief to go towards health and education in Africa. The charity itself matched the government pledge with £10 million of its own. David Cameron did his bit as well in a Master Chef skit, happily eating a three-course meal

The real hit of the night which sent telephone contributions soaring into the stratosphere was a sketch by the golden-voiced Susan Boyle, winner of Britain’s Got Talent, accompanied by comedian Peter Kay in drag as Geraldine McQueen. A fantastic duet followed , with Susan Boyle’s wig growing bigger and bigger as she sang.

A team of comedians comprising Catherine Tate, David Walliams, Corden and John Bishop raised the roof as would-be boy band Fake That being auditioned by famous band TakeThat. Victoria Wood, Joanna Lumley, Kim Cattrall and Jennifer Saunders joined forces for a spoof on the hit drama Upstairs Downstairs. Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles stayed on air for more than 50 hours non-stop, setting anew world record and raising more than £2 million and only collapsing in a heap at 10:30 Friday morning.
