Comparethemarket warns Brit drivers to keep their licences up to date

DVLA licenceA survey carried out by has found around 1.5 million UK drivers are risking heavy fines just for not keeping their licences up to date. John Miles is the price comparison website’s Motoring Head and he says drivers can be fined up to £1,000 for not keeping their personal information current.

Mr Miles noted that the most common issue was failing to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of a change in address. He carried on by saying drivers also needed to bear in mind they could be fined the same amount for not updating marital statuses or any name changes.

Mr Miles added that risking such a large penalty for something that could be changed for free was illogical. He finished off by saying the DVLA’s website had the warnings in black and white and there were no doubts as to what the risks were.

The law says current addresses on driving licences are essential in case the driver has an accident. Motoring analysts say an incorrect address on a driving licence could also mean the driver is paying the wrong amount for his or her insurance premium.’s study found 35 per cent of drivers did not even know they had to change the addresses on their driving licences if they moved. The figure was higher among drivers in the 18-24 age group. Half said they were unaware of the requirement and 10 per cent were using licences with incorrect addresses on them.
