Consider a driving holiday in Tasmania
Posted on: May 21st, 2008 by Frank ToddPackaged holiday tours are increasingly falling out of favour among today’s intrepid travellers, particularly amount the internet-savvy who can research and make all of their arrangements easily. Finding a really good place to travel can still be difficult, but the New Zealand Herald recommends Tasmania for those who love to drive.
Travellers who have already rented a car in Australia can take a car ferry to Tasmania from Melbourne, crossing the rough waters of the Strait by night. Those flying into Hobart will find a host of rental companies at the airport including Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Thrifty.
Outside of Hobart there is relatively little traffic on the roads and the distances between attractions is relatively small, making it a good place to get around quickly for those with short vacations.
Tasmania has many historic towns and villages with stunning scenery along each connecting road. Despite its small size, Tasmania offers diverse landscapes and is particularly different from the east to the west coast.
The east coast is the most popular area for tourists as the weather is calmer and allows drivers to get out of the car and enjoy the beaches. Within a day’s drive from the capital, along the Arthur Highway is the Forestier Peninsula, but the entire island is covered in beautiful ancient forests.
Drivers often take a break from the wheel to stroll the sands, explore the woods or go swimming or fishing. The wildlife along the coast is rich, especially the birds.
